Dental implant procedure and cost - Information for Laguna Niguel residents
Although the concept of dental implants dates back to ancient cultures, an effective technique was not discovered until the 1950s. Over the years, clinical research, new technology, and improved dental materials have helped this procedure become the choice solution for replacing teeth. Today’s dental implants are safe, predictable, cost-effective, and long lasting. Drs. Alex and Nina Basti provide implants to residents of Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, and other nearby communities.
The entire process takes several months to complete. However, the success rate of implants is well over 90 percent, and they can last for the rest of your life. Most patients consider it a very small investment of time and money for a permanent solution.
The first step is an examination and consultation with Dr. Alex or Nina Basti. For most people, implants are an excellent solution. However, occasionally there are issues that need to be addressed to ensure the success of the procedure:
- If you have gum disease, it will need to be treated. Although the actual implants are not susceptible to infection or cavities, any disease in the gum and bone tissue can cause resorption, which could lead to implant failure.
- Do you smoke? If so, you will be advised to stop. You are probably aware that this habit is destructive to your overall health, but you may not realize that it can inhibit healing. Any surgery, even a minor one such as implant placement, will be more prone to complications if you are a smoker.
- Bone loss is common for patients who lost their teeth to gum disease, and those who have been missing teeth for some time. If there is insufficient bone to support an implant, your dentist may recommend a bone graft, which is surprisingly simple and comfortable.
The next step is placing the implant. It is a simple, yet delicate, procedure. The implant is inserted in the jawbone through a tiny incision in the gums. It will be topped with a healing collar or a temporary restoration, to protect the site while the bone heals.
Any pain or soreness you feel should fade within a few days, though it will take several months for the bone to grow around, and stabilize, the implant. At this time, your final restoration can be placed. The last phase is usually completed in two steps. An abutment (connector) is attached to the implant, and then your new teeth are put in place.
