Permanent solution for missing teeth from your dentist in Laguna Niguel

In the past, a fixed dental bridge was typically the only practical option for replacing a single tooth. Removable dentures were used when all of the teeth were missing. When several teeth were missing, bridges or partial dentures were used, depending on the circumstances. Today, we also have the option of implant-supported restorations. One, several, or all teeth can be supported by dental implants, for greater comfort and longevity than any other option.

What are dental implants?

When you think of an implant, you probably think of a replacement tooth. Actually, that porcelain tooth you may be envisioning is comprised of two or three separate parts. The implant is simply a tiny piece of titanium, which you will never see. It is implanted in the jawbone, serving the same function as a tooth’s roots. A small connecter, called an abutment, may be attached to the implant. The “tooth” is a beautiful porcelain crown, one of several restorations that can be supported by implants – along with bridges and full dentures.

Benefits

Drs. Alex and Nina Basti offer traditional dentures and bridges as well as implants, because everyone has different oral health needs. However, for most patients, implants are highly recommended, due to their unique benefits.
  • Bone tissue accepts titanium, just as it would a natural tooth root. The process, called osseointegration, helps prevent the bone loss that is inherent with missing teeth.
  • Implant supported restorations do not slip, wobble, or fall out.
  • Oral hygiene is no more difficult with implants than with natural teeth.
  • You can eat anything you want, without discomfort or embarrassment.
  • With good at-home hygiene, and regular professional cleaning, dental implants can last a lifetime!
What to expect

Dental implants are placed in a gentle, minimally invasive surgery. The area is completely numbed, to ensure that you remain comfortable throughout the procedure. You may be fitted with a temporary restoration or a healing collar to cover the implant. After placement, you may experience bruising, swelling, bleeding, or soreness. This is mild, most patients compare it to the feeling after an extraction or filling, and can usually be controlled with over the counter pain relievers. When osseointegration is completed (usually a few months) the final restoration is added, and you have a new smile for life!
