Listen to your dentist and orthodontist: How retainers keep Laguna Niguel smiles straight

There was a time when it was almost unheard of for an adult to wear braces, and most children objected loudly. Times have changed, and today we have a vast array of options to suit the needs and preferences of each individual. If you need orthodontic treatment, it is probably for one of three reasons:

The last item on the list is unfortunately common. When the braces come off, your teeth will look and feel as if they have always been straight. They will not be loose, and they will feel stable. It's all too easy to think that your crooked teeth are "cured" and the retainer is unnecessary. Trust the experts. If your dentist or orthodontist told you to wear a retainer, there is a good reason.

Teeth are rooted in the bone, but they are not part of the bone. As braces apply constant pressure, the teeth shift very gradually. The process cannot be completed too quickly, because the connective tissues need time to adapt. They gradually compress on one side and stretch on the other side, allowing the tooth to straighten. However, when the pressure is removed these tissues naturally attempt to return to their previous state. Without a retainer, they will gradually pull the tooth back to where it was.

The longer your teeth have been straight, the more the connective tissues adapt. You will be advised to wear your retainer constantly for a time, and then wear it only at night. Like braces, retainers come in various styles, to suit patients' varying needs. Some are clear plastic, similar to an Invisalign aligner, and some are made of wire. A fixed retainer can be bonded to the back of your teeth, where it is not visible at all.
