Laguna Niguel residents become part of the modern history of laser dentistry
Drs. Alex and Nina Basti, regularly see patients from nearby communities such as Laguna Niguel, as well as those who travel a great distance. They come to Mission Viejo for dental treatment because of our exceptional service, quality care, and cutting edge technology.
Many patients tell us how much they love our WaterLase machine, which eliminates much of the pain, stress, and discomfort of dentistry. They are amazed to discover a dental experience unlike anything they imagined possible. A truly pleasant, comfortable dental visit may feel monumental, especially to those who have suffered from dental phobia. However, few people realize that they are taking part in one of the most significant developments in dental laser history.
Archeologists have found evidence of primitive dental drills as early as 7000BC. Through the centuries, the practice naturally evolved, though significant advances did not come until modern times. As recently as the 19th century, dentistry wasn't much more scientific than cutting hair. In fact, it was usually performed by barbers at that time. Gradually, education, research, science, and logic prevailed as dentistry evolved into a highly skilled medical practice.
Like all healthcare, dentistry has advanced at a startlingly rapid rate with modern technology. One of the most significant advances began in the 1960s, with the first experimental dental laser. Since that time, considerable research and testing led to the use of various wavelengths and delivery techniques for different applications.
In 1988, a company called BioLase made a revolutionary discovery: Certain laser wavelengths, when combined with water, had the ability to cut tooth tissue while avoiding damage to the bone or the surrounding tooth structure. Since that time, they have continued researching and developing newer and better alternatives to drills and scalpels. In the early 90s, the first soft tissue dental lasers gained FDA approval. In 1998 came the culmination of many years of exhaustive research, and it was called WaterLase. Fifteen years later, this device has been refined into a gentle, safe, fast, and effective answer to the pain and negative effects associated with traditional techniques.
