Dentists in the Laguna Niguel area use advanced laser technology for precision fillings
Dental decay is a progressive problem. Once you have a cavity, it will continue growing until it is cleaned and filled. Historically, the process involved using a drill to remove all of the damaged tooth material, and often a significant amount of healthy tooth structure. Fillings were often much larger than the actual cavities, and they did little to improve the appearance of teeth. Fortunately, that has changed with two important advances in dentistry, cosmetic filling materials, and dental lasers.
We use cosmetic (tooth colored) resin filling material. It can be colored to blend flawlessly with the surrounding enamel and sculpted to match the natural contours of your tooth. This technique, when performed by a skilled cosmetic dentist, produces the most beautiful, natural looking fillings. Additionally, resin fillings are bonded to the tooth, which means that they can be shaped to the tooth.
With cosmetic composite fillings, the healthy tooth structure can be left intact, with only the decayed portion removed. However, drills often remove more than is necessary, and in some cases, they can cause hairline fractures, leading to decay in the future. Drs. Nina and Alex Basti use Waterlase, an advanced hybrid technology that combines a precision laser beam with directed water spray, for a gentle and precise alternative to drilling.
The procedure can be completed in a single visit, with little to no drilling. Many patients do not even require anesthetic shots because the procedure is so gentle. However, if you do need anesthetic, don't expect a painful injection. We use the Wand Single Tooth Anesthetic system, which typically eliminates the pain and discomfort of injections.
After the decay has been removed, a putty like material is applied directly to the tooth, and shaped by your dentist. It is then hardened and further sculpted, and then polished. When complete, you will have a whole, healthy, natural looking tooth.
