San Juan Capistrano residents can improve their smiles with porcelain dental veneers
Very few individuals in this world are naturally blessed with flawless smiles. Historically, the remainder of the population had little choice but to accept what nature had given them. Thankfully, that is no longer the case. Modern cosmetic dentistry provides a wide variety of solutions, so that you can have the smile of your dreams.
One of the most popular, versatile, and conservative procedures is porcelain dental veneers. They are ultra-thin slivers of porcelain that cover the visible part of teeth to disguise flaws and alter the appearance. Due to their minimal thickness, very little, if any, tooth alteration is needed in preparation.
What veneers treat
One of the great things about porcelain veneers is the versatility of this treatment. If you have one or two teeth with minor flaws, we can create veneers that match your other teeth in size, shape, and color – effectively erasing the blemishes. On the other hand, if all of your teeth are shaped unattractively, spaced too far apart, or naturally dark and unresponsive to bleaching, we can completely transform your smile.
Are you a candidate?
Before recommending veneers, Dr. Alex or Nina Basti will conduct a comprehensive examination, and discuss your options. Most patients with cosmetic concerns are great candidates for veneers. This considered a very conservative treatment because they are so thin that the majority of the tooth is left intact. However, for the same reason veneers may not be the best choice for people with damaged or decayed teeth.
The porcelain acts as artificial tooth enamel, protecting the underlying soft dentin layer, but it does not add a significant amount of strength. Additionally, because it only covers the front surface, it will not protect a brittle tooth from fracturing. If your teeth have deep cracks, large cavities, or severe wear, your dentist may recommend porcelain crowns instead. They serve the same cosmetic purpose as veneers, with the added benefits of strengthening, protecting, and restoring damaged teeth.
