What to expect during the procedure for dental veneers in Mission Viejo
A beautiful smile is a wonderful thing to share with the world. Thanks to advances in modern cosmetic dentistry, head-turning smiles are not reserved for the rich and famous, or those who were naturally blessed. Porcelain veneers are one of the most popular and versatile ways to transform a smile. The procedure is fast, conservative, and comfortable – with stunning results!
Initial consultation
The first step is an examination, and an in-depth discussion about your goals. The doctor will explain whether you are a good candidate for veneers, and any other viable options. Some issues may be corrected with a simpler solution such as whitening or cosmetic fillings, and severe dental damage may call for a stronger restoration such as a crown. However, most people who are unhappy with the appearance of their teeth are good candidates for veneers.
Tooth preparation
Local anesthetic is used to ensure your comfort during the preparation. A thin layer of tooth enamel may be removed to prevent the veneers from looking or feeling bulky. The goal of this step is to ensure that the front surface of the veneer is flush with where the surface of the enamel should be. If it is too large, or in need of reshaping a bit more tooth material may be removed. If the tooth is small, or the enamel has worn off, this may not be necessary. In some cases, the tooth may be built up.
Once preparation is complete, the doctor will take impressions and send them, along with the design, to a quality dental laboratory. Temporary veneers may be placed to protect your teeth and the appearance of your smile while the permanent ones are fabricated. This usually takes about two weeks.
Placement
When your new, custom veneers are ready, we will schedule your next appointment. The doctor will gently remove any temporary restoration and clean the teeth. Once this is done, your new veneers will be temporarily placed on your teeth to check the size, fit, coloring, comfort, and overall appearance. If adjustments are needed, they can usually be made here in the office, but we will send them back to the lab if needed.
When both you and the doctor are satisfied that your veneers are just right, they will be permanently bonded in place. A curing light is used to harden the cement, so your new smile is fully functional, and stunning, when you walk out of our office!
