We learn when we are very young that we should care for our teeth by brushing them morning and night. Many of us also learned as children that sugary foods pose a threat to healthy teeth, and that too much candy can lead to cavities and pain. The challenge that many people face is the addition of flossing as a daily oral hygiene practice. Brushing produces an immediately satisfying result. Our teeth look white and shiny and our breath feels fresh. Flossing, on the other hand, doesn't seem as rewarding. Maybe, on occasion, a small bit of food is removed from in between teeth. Most often, however, there is nothing to see on that string of floss.

In addition to brushing, flossing is vital for good oral health. In our Brentwood dental practice, we discuss the purpose of flossing, and can demonstrate how to brush and floss properly for the best effect. Like brushing, flossing is necessary for the removal of oral bacteria. Brushing alone cannot reach all surfaces of the teeth. In order to remove bacteria from between teeth, flossing must be performed.

Oral bacteria are a natural occurrence. Due to our typical diets, harmful oral bacteria can more easily thrive, causing problems like cavities and gum disease. While we cannot necessarily be expected to eat only fruits, vegetables, and seeds to keep teeth healthy, we can learn to care for our teeth and gums in such a way that bacteria have less power to affect oral health. At this time, daily brushing and flossing remain the most effective practices to accomplish this goal.

We are fortunate enough to get two chances to care for our teeth. Once baby teeth are replaced by permanent teeth, it is even more important to engage in the daily practices intended to preserve natural tooth structure for life. Your dentist is committed to helping you achieve your best oral health and most attractive smile.
