The way that we address the cosmetic concerns associated with age has changed significantly since the development of injectables like dermal fillers.

Dermal fillers are products formulated to restore a more youthful appearance by replacing volume and softening lines around the eyes, nose and mouth. Fillers may also be used to enhance the fullness of the lips and cheeks.

Why we lose volume

Perhaps you have wondered what has happened to your facial contours. As we age, the amount of fluid and fatty tissue present just beneath the skin decreases. As a result of yearly loss, the cheeks may flatten out, causing the appearance of sagging jowls. In order to remain youthful in appearance, the skin requires adequate stores of collagen, elastin and other vital substances. Dermal fillers play an important role in the restoration of contours because they can quickly replace these key ingredients into the skin.

Where can fillers be used?

Some of the common areas that fillers are used include:

• Lips
• Nasolabial folds between the nose and mouth
• Marionette lines between the mouth and the chin

We understand the importance of efficiency when it comes to treating our patients' faces and their smiles. The dermal fillers that we use have been proven in the areas of safety and longevity. Each is a synthetic form of a vital substance, such as hyaluronic acid. Side effects are mild and temporary, and complications are very rare.

What to expect

Before commencing treatment, we perform a thorough consultation and evaluation of the area of concern. In some cases, we may recommend that dermal fillers be combined with Botox® to successfully achieve the desired outcome. Fillers and Botox® make wonderful companions as each is designed for a specific intent.

One of the reasons that injectables are so popular is because treatment takes less than an hour to complete and requires no recovery period. To improve your comfort, we apply a topical anesthetic that will numb the surface so all you feel is a slight pinch, if anything at all, from your treatment.

After we inject the necessary amount of product beneath the skin, we will gently massage it to disperse effects evenly through the area of concern. As the filler moves through tissues, a slight sting may be felt. This is only a momentary discomfort.

Immediately after treatment, results can be noticed. As the filler settles in the tissues beneath the skin, full effects will become apparent. Typically this occurs within a week. We suggest that patients avoid alcohol consumption and smoking for the first 24 hours after their treatment. Vigorous exercise, sun and sun beds should be avoided for 2 days and the area treated should not be massaged for 5 days. As much as possible, you should also avoid sleeping on the area we treat for 5 days. Makeup can be worn as soon as the day after treatment.

Every person metabolizes substances differently. In most cases, results from dermal fillers will remain for 6 to 12 months. With repeat treatments, the skin can remain looking vibrant and youthful year after year.

Considerations

Women who are pregnant or breast feeding should not get dermal filler treatments. Other exclusions include active cold sores, auto-immune conditions, active skin infection and certain skin disorders. If you have had laser treatment or a chemical peel, you may schedule dermal filler treatment 6 weeks later.
