What can chemical peels treat?
Chemical peels are among the least invasive skin improvement techniques. They may be used to improve:
- Sun-damaged skin
- Scars
- Rough skin and scaly patches
- Irregular skin pigmentation
- Freckles
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Age and liver spots
- Acne or acne scars
How chemical peels work
The peeling formula is carefully applied to the treatment site, and allowed to remain on the skin for a precise length of time. It gently removes the outer layers of the skin, allowing fresh, healthy, youthful skin to develop in its place. The timing will depend on the strength of the formula, and the desired results.
Recovery and results
A chemical peel causes skin to shed dead and damaged cells, and form new ones. However, some peels go deeper than others do, which will affect the recovery time and process.
- Light peels are excellent for overall skin rejuvenation, refining texture, and treating mild sun damage. A series of light peels may be recommended in place of a more aggressive peel for patients with sensitive skin. They have little to no downtime. You may notice a bit of redness, irritation, or possibly crusting, which should resolve quickly. They are gentle enough to use every few weeks to maintain fresh, smooth skin.
- Medium peels are stronger and capable of treating deeper layers of skin. There is a bit more recovery time involved. You may notice discoloration, crusting, and old layers of skin sloughing off for a few days. Within a few weeks, your skin should be completely healed, with a noticeable fresher, smoother, more even texture and appearance. Medium peels may be repeated twice yearly to maintain results.
- Deep peels can achieve the most dramatic improvements, and they are appropriate for conditions such as severe sun damage, scars, or fine wrinkles. They also take additional recovery time, but you should be able to wear cosmetic products if you wish within a couple of weeks. Deep peels may be repeated annually as needed.
