How are Sculptra® Injections Used?

Sculptra® injections are commonly used to address nasolabial folds (extending from the corner of the nose to the mouth), chin wrinkles, and marionette lines (framing the mouth). The procedure can also be used for some other types of facial contouring.

How does the Procedure Work?

Sculptra® injections are administered in our office, and they typically take just a few minutes to complete. The skin will be cleaned and marked, so the physician can easily place the injections in the precise location to diminish the appearance of facial wrinkles.

Topical anesthetic may also be applied to the skin prior to giving the injections, particularly if the patient is concerned about any discomfort during the procedure. The injections are then administered, requiring just seconds to complete each individual location. After the injections are completed, the patient may be given ice to reduce possible swelling at the injection sites. A series of injections administered several weeks apart is usually needed to achieve desired results. The number of sessions will vary from one patient to another, but the average is three.

Recovery and Results

Patients are usually allowed to return home right after the procedure. Any mild swelling or soreness that occurs after treatment can be effectively managed with ice packs and over-the-counter pain medication. Some results can be seen right away, while the full results are typically seen within a week after the procedure.

Sculptra® injections are not considered a permanent anti-aging treatment. Patients will need to schedule repeat sessions to maintain results. The time between treatments will depend on the individual patient, but studies have shown that the results of Sculptra® can last up to two years, possibly longer.
