Endodontic care is what most of us know as root canal therapy. This procedure is one that has been largely misrepresented as painful, lengthy, or otherwise unpleasant. At Esquire Dental Centres, we discuss with our patients why root canal therapy is recommended. When possible, we show them images of their tooth so that they can see firsthand the issue that is causing them pain, or may in the near future. We are also happy to answer questions about why roots become infected and how endodontics can restore comfort and health. If you are experiencing tooth pain, we encourage you to call us in Pickering, North York, or Scarborough. Early care may prevent the need for root canal therapy.
One of the most important things we can do for our patients is assure them that they will be comfortable during the root canal procedure. In most cases, the removal of infected pulp tissue takes only about the same amount of time as a filling. Before the procedure appointment, the tooth will have already been prepared in the same manner. When you get a filling, your dentist numbs the treatment area, gently removes damaged tooth material, and fills the cavity. With root canal therapy, damaged enamel is removed before the actual procedure.
When you arrive for your root canal treatment, the area will be numbed and the temporary restoration will be removed. Because decay has already been removed from the tooth’s crown, we get straight to work removing infected tissue from the center of the tooth. Using tiny files, your dentist ensures that no infected tissue remains in the root canal. All nerves, vessels, and pulp are removed. The canal is sterilized with a liquid solution and is then sealed with biocompatible filling material.
A tooth treated with root canal therapy no longer has the nerves that cause sensation. For this reason, the treated tooth will no longer feel pain. In the first few days after the root canal procedure, however, it is possible to feel slight discomfort. This may be due to inflammation in the tissues that surround the treated root canal. Most patients find mild soreness a minor nuisance that fades very quickly.
Root canal therapy involves multiple visits to fully restore the tooth with infection removal and the placement of a crown that will last many years. Throughout the process, we follow up closely to make sure comfort is fully restored.
