Dentist can restore form and function to the smile
By
As can be determined by the name, partial dentures are those used when only some teeth are missing. Full dentures are used when all teeth are lost or need to be extracted. In either type of denture appliance, the material used to fabricate the device may be acrylic resin, and may also include some porcelain as well. Also in each type, Dr. Bernstein's focus is to create a snug fit against the gums, providing a firm foundation for optimal function.
This custom fit begins with a thorough evaluation of the bone structure in the jaw. In some cases of full dentures, bony ridges in the jaw bone may need to be stabilized for the best fit. The next step in the denture process is to take a bite impression, which guides the design of the denture appliance, allowing us to determine the exact size of teeth to be used for replacement. During this step in the process, the color of artificial teeth and gum tissue are also chosen. Should the patient obtaining a partial denture that will be visible in the smile wish for whiter teeth, this is the ideal time for professional teeth whitening.
During the first week or two of wearing new dentures, either partial or full, the muscles of the mouth will work to get used to the new structure. To encourage this process, it is recommended that the new denture appliance be worn regularly, removed only at night for sleep. After removing dentures, gums can be gently brushed with a soft toothbrush to wash away bacteria that can harm delicate gum tissue.
