Work Related Injuries
Many people who experience chronic pain are actually affected by some type of musculoskeletal disorder. Conditions categorized as musculoskeletal disorders include those such as carpal tunnel syndrome as well as low back pain and chronic neck pain. Such conditions can range in their effect depending on severity. For some, a musculoskeletal disorder can be downright debilitating. Worse yet, the condition may be the result of the work environment.
The effects of work related injuries may be experienced over time, because of repetitive movements or simply sitting at a desk looking at a computer for hours every day. These injuries, however, can be very damaging to a person’s livelihood, causing pain, tingling, or numbness, limiting productivity, causing missed work, making it difficult to perform certain tasks, and even causing temporary or permanent disability.
Risk factors for work related musculoskeletal disorders
Because the word “injury” is involved, we tend to look at work-related injuries as something traumatic. In reality, many people suffer from a work related musculoskeletal disorder due to a mild repetitive movement rather than an accident. Often, a work-related condition is attributed to movement.
- Pulling, pushing, lifting, or carrying heavy objects
- Lifting objects overhead
- Repetitive movement in the hands (carpal tunnel)
- Repetitively twisting, bending, or lifting exerts the lower back
- Posture
These are just a few of the movements that commonly lead to chronic pain or a limited range of motion. Your Portland chiropractor can alleviate symptoms with direct treatment and Dr. Stephen Besser can discuss ways to improve the work environment or the way in which movements are completed so that the risk of future injury is decreased.
