Ayurvedic Principles

at Boris Lipovetskiy DMD, Doral, FL
The Sanskrit word “Ayurveda” literally means the science of life. This powerful concept originated thousands of years ago in India, and it is one of the oldest whole-body wellness systems. Advanced Dental Wellness Center integrates the benefits of Ayurvedic principles into treatment, with an Ayurvedic Wellness Consultant on staff.

The purpose of Ayurveda

An Ayurvedic lifestyle nurtures a healthy body, content emotional state, and peaceful society. The very simple, dual purposes of Ayurveda are:

The composition of a human being

In Ayurveda, each person is seen as a unique individual, made up of five primary elements:
  • Ether (space)
  • Air
  • Fire
  • Water
  • Earth

When any of these elements, either in the environment or internally, is out of balance, there is an impact on physiological functions of the body.

Doshas

Dominance of a specific combination of the five primary elements creates a Dosha:
  • The elements of ether and air result in Vata Dosha, forces that direct circulation, respiration, nerve impulses, and elimination functions.
  • Pitta Dosha occurs when elements of fire and water are dominant. Pitta Dosha embodies transformation, such as metabolism of food into nutrition, and cellular regeneration.
  • Kapha Dosha, predominantly earth and water elements, is responsible for growth, and components of the body that protect tissues (such as spinal fluid and the lining of the stomach).

The principles of Ayurveda give us a glimpse into why one person responds differently to diet, exercise, and medical or dental treatment than another person with the same health condition. Our Ayurvedic Wellness Consultant develops a grasp of the diverse proportions of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha that make you absolutely one of a kind. That insight is used to design a treatment protocol to address your specific health challenges, through:
  • Lifestyle adjustments
  • Nutritional guidelines
  • Herbal supplements

The concept of Ayurvedic wellness, maintaining a balance of the three Doshas to prevent and heal disease, is mirrored in many other ancient cultures. The important take-away, as applied to modern dentistry, is that all five elements are essential to human life, and no single Dosha can sustain life. They must work together in harmony, for health of body, mind, and spirit.
