Excimer Laser

People with thick patches of scaly skin on their knees, elbows, scalp, hands, feet, or lower back may suffer from a chronic skin disease called psoriasis. Anyone can develop psoriasis from children to adults. However, the disease is most common among adults. Psoriasis can range from mild to severe. A rash is a sign of mild psoriasis. Moderate to severe psoriasis can include inflamed skin with raised areas topped with silvery and scaling skin. The skin becomes tender and itchy with severe cases of psoriasis. For mild to moderate psoriasis, laser light therapy may be the ideal treatment.

At Alta Vista Dermatology, we can use the Pharos Excimer laser system to help clear psoriasis. During the procedure in our Highlands Ranch, CO office, we aim the laser directly at the patches of psoriasis. Patients may feel a warming sensation at the treatment site; however, the procedure is generally comfortable. The Excimer laser never touches the surrounding skin, which reduces the risk of UV radiation exposure. There are usually two treatments that last 15 to 30 minutes each week for three or more weeks with at least two days in between treatments.

It is important to note that this laser system is not a magic wand that will erase psoriasis. Instead, the light acts as an anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative agent for the psoriasis cells.
