We would all prefer to avoid any type of skin cancer, and we can help do so through education and the implementation of healthy habits that minimize exposure to UV rays. Although sun spots are often referred to as “age spots” or “liver spots,” the truth is, they may be early signs of skin cancer.
Spots on skin regularly exposed to the sun or that has sustained sun damage may be simple hyperpigmentation – or they may be actinic keratoses. AK or actinic keratosis is a condition in which a small flesh-toned, tan, pink, or red bump may form on the skin. Whether flat or raised from the skin’s surface, an AK lesion may look scaly or crusty either all the time or occasionally.
Touch may be the best sense to help you identify an actinic keratosis lesion. Small bumps that itch or feel “prickly” or that are rough to the touch may indicate this pre-cancerous dermatologic condition. Location is also a potential identifying factor, with many AK growths developing in sun-exposed areas such as the:
Sun spots and actinic keratoses are the result of sun exposure. Because we all get some degree of exposure to the sun, the risk of these lesions is widespread amongst people of all ages. There are additional factors, however, that may increase the chances of damage. These include lighter skin and eyes, which tends to make one more susceptible to burning with minimal sun exposure. Certain health conditions and age also lead to greater sun sensitivity. The American Academy of Dermatology estimates that 60 percent of at-risk individuals will develop at least one precancerous lesion sometime after the age of forty.
At Alta Vista Dermatology in Highlands Ranch, we understand the benefits of spending time outdoors. One of our priorities in patient care is to provide accurate information that will empower each individual to protect his or her skin from sun spots and precancerous growths. Prevention is the best medicine even when it comes to sun spots. The daily use of sunscreen is one of the best things you can do to prevent damage, and we encourage our patients to avoid tanning of any kind. Additionally, we provide annual skin cancer screenings to adults of all ages.
Sun spots are more than a cosmetic problem. Patients who visit our dermatology practice may obtain treatment that improves appearance and preserves health. Depending on your needs and expectations, we may recommend treatment such as chemical peels, cryosurgery for individual lesions, or topical medication.
