Benign growths are not associated with skin cancer and may not progress to cancerous lesions. They can be concerning dermatologic problems. At Alta Vista Dermatology, we offer treatments for numerous types of benign growths.
The medical term for a skin tag is acrochordon. These small growths primarily form within creases due to the friction of skin rubbing together. Areas where skin tags may develop include the groin, underarms, and the neck. Sometimes, we also see skin tags on the eyelids and other areas of the face. Though the growths are typically painless, irritation may occur because of tissue being cut when shaving or getting caught on jewelry or clothing. Numerous excision methods may be applied to skin tags.
A cyst may form from a blocked pore or from surgery or trauma that prompts the dermis, or inner layer of skin to grow around the epidermis, the outer layer. Cysts may be painful or they may cause no symptoms at all. Your dermatologist may perform surgical excision to remove a cyst.
This benign skin growth is more common in older adults. It may begin as a small bump of rough texture and progress into an area of thickness that takes on a waxy appearance. A seborrheic keratosis may be brown, black, tan, or white. Methods such as curettage (shaving), cryosurgery (freezing), or excision may be used to remove this type of growth.
Lipomas are some of the most common benign growths. This type of tumor consists of fatty (adipose) tissue and generally produces no pain. A lipoma may enlarge over time and it can be surgically excised.
Most benign growths can be removed in our office with local anesthesia to make the removal process comfortable. Whether for cosmetic or medical reasons, growth removal can be planned around your needs.
