Family Dentistry
What does family dentistry mean to you? In our office, it means much more than treating patients of all ages. We strive to maintain a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, where you can feel at home. We give our patients the same level of care that we would want for our own family members. In fact, our patients are like our extended family, and that is how they are treated.Dr. Burman and his team understand that every stage of life brings different oral health needs and challenges. Furthermore, each individual person has different needs and goals. Therefore, we believe that all dental care should be highly customized, tailored to your one-of-a-kind smile. We have patients ranging in age from 6 months to 94 years old, and our team is trained in all aspects of family dentistry.
Pregnancy
For an expectant mother, safety is paramount. We take great care to ensure your safety and comfort, as well as the safety of your unborn child. Although, with proper precautions, many dental procedures can be performed, we prefer to choose with caution. Therefore, we advise against elective procedures, such as cosmetic dentistry, while pregnant. These should be scheduled in prior to pregnancy, or postponed until after birth. When possible, necessary dental work should be scheduled during the second trimester. We work closely with the obstetrician and other medical care providers to coordinate care, and customize treatment. Hygiene and preventive care are essential because the changes in hormones that occur during pregnancy greatly increase a woman’s risk of developing periodontal disease. We normally recommend cleaning every three months during this time.
Infants
Brushing and flossing are not necessary for infants because teeth do not begin emerging for about six months. However, that does not mean that hygiene is unnecessary. We recommend gently cleaning your baby’s gums using a soft damp cloth. Once a tooth has appeared, it needs to be brushed very carefully. Choose a toothbrush that is designed for infants, with soft bristles, and a small head that can easily fit in his or her tiny mouth. Another option is wetting a baby washcloth and gently wiping emerging teeth. This is also the ideal time to begin dental care. The initial visits do not typically involve treatment, but rather it’s an opportunity for us to educate parents and for the infants to become acquainted with our team, and learn to feel comfortable in our office.Children
Regular dental care is just as important for children as it is for adults. There is a common misconception that the baby teeth are less important than permanent teeth, because they are temporary. Although that is true, it is important to remember that your child will have these teeth for several years. Cavities and other dental problems are just as painful and problematic for a child as they are for an adult. Additionally, these teeth serve a very important function in your child’s oral development. They act as placeholders for the permanent teeth, which will emerge later. Keeping the baby teeth healthy and intact until they fall out naturally helps guide the growth of the jaw and the development of new teeth.Preventive dental treatments, such as fluoride treatment or sealants, help prevent decay by strengthening protecting the tooth enamel. Of course, we offer a full range of emergency and restorative services, if cavities, injury, or other dental problems arise.
Teens
The teenage years are a time of transition in many ways, including oral health. Most people have fully developed adult teeth by the age of 16. Braces, if needed, are typically worn during the preteen and teen years. Unfortunately, this can also be a time of dental neglect, which can lead to early oral health problems. Teenagers tend to snack frequently, drink acidic or sugary beverages, and often neglect proper brushing and flossing techniques. We work with both parents and teens to educate them about the importance of hygiene and oral health, and teach them why good habits, established now, can benefit their overall health and quality of life for years to come.Adults
Young adults may wish to correct crooked teeth or other problems that were not addressed during childhood/teen years. If the teeth are strong and healthy, a simple regimen of good hygiene, good nutrition, and regular dental care can keep them that way. Early adulthood is also a time when many people begin to consider the appearance of their smile. We provide top-notch cosmetic dentistry treatment, which offers an endless array of options for enhancing or correcting a smile.Seniors
We are dedicated to helping our patients maintain healthy, sparkling white smiles well into their golden years. The risks for many oral health and cosmetic dental issues increase with age, so we adjust our preventive care regimens and recommendations accordingly. We take care to review and discuss each patient’s medical history, because diseases and medications can have a considerable impact on oral health. For example, periodontal disease and diabetes are closely linked. Management of periodontal disease can make it easier to control diabetes, and the reverse is true. Therefore, customized and coordinated care is important for overall health and well-being. Additionally, some health conditions that limit motor function, such as arthritis, can make brushing and flossing challenging. We may suggest products or techniques to make oral hygiene easier, more convenient, and more effective. We hope you and your family choose to join our family of healthy, gorgeous smiles.
