Advances in gum surgery
In the past, there was no easy solution for patients with excess, insufficient, or uneven gum tissue. Scalpel based surgery was available, and is still used in some dental offices. However, it can be an uncomfortable, bloody procedure with a difficult recovery period. Thankfully, it is no longer necessary. Progressive dental practices, such as URBN Dental, use modern laser techniques, which have revolutionized gum surgery.- The procedure is nearly bloodless
- Laser energy sterilizes the surgical site, minimizing risk of infection
- Fast, comfortable procedure and recovery
- No stitches needed
- Enhanced precision for beautiful results
When is gum surgery needed?
Surgical gum revision may be performed for cosmetic or therapeutic purposes.- Cosmetic gum surgery – A gummy smile can be unattractive, and make your teeth look too short. Alternately, a receded gum line is equally unattractive and makes teeth look too long. When the gums are uneven, the smile tends to look asymmetrical. Your most beautiful smile is achieved when the gum line is contoured by removing excess tissue, grafting to replace tissue, or a combination.
- Therapeutic gum surgery – The most common medical reason for this procedure is advanced periodontal disease. When infection and inflammation cause the gums to separate from the teeth, pockets are formed. Plaque and bacteria settle in these pockets, making the infection nearly impossible to eradicate. Gum surgery removes diseased tissue and biofilm, leaving healthy tissue that is capable of reattaching and healing.
If your gums are unhealthy or the appearance of your gum line is less than ideal, call and schedule a consultation with URBN Dental.
