What preventative treatment options do you offer?

Taking care of your teeth doesn't mean going to the dentist only when you feel pain or when you need to have your teeth cleaned. In addition to keeping your teeth clean by brushing and flossing, you should also practice methods of preventing damage and illness to your teeth and mouth.

At Laser Dental Associates, we offer a number preventative treatment options that help our patients prevent cavities, decay, and long term problems that may cause infection and lead to different types of periodontal disease. These include dental sealants, topical fluoride applications, and conservative restorations.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a preventative treatment where plastic material is placed over one or more teeth to protect teeth from cavities and other forms of tooth decay. The treatment is done in the Laser Dental Associates office and involves a solution being applied over the affected teeth and then being dried by administering a special light to harden the solution on the surface of the teeth. There are some solutions which harden on their own by curing. Once this is done, a hard layer is formed on the teeth, protecting it from being affected by bacteria and plaque. While the new layer of plastic is hard and can withstand chewing activities, it may wear off over time. Dental sealants typically last about five years.

Topical Fluoride Applications

Fluoride is applied to teeth for the same reason as dental sealants; to prevent tooth decay. People normally apply the fluoride topically to the teeth using gels, varnishes, toothpastes, and mouth rinses. We do such treatments in this dental office where fluoride is applied, because fluoride helps to make teeth stronger and prevents them from being affected by cavities and decay. Having strong teeth means that you can chew better and your mouth will function properly to give you optimal health.

Conservative Restorations

Conservative dental restorations are items such as crowns, bridges, and implants, which are used to restore teeth affected by decay, disease, or trauma. They are used to restore teeth that have lost some or all of their structure. A root canal is also a restorative procedure because it removes the infected nerve and fills in that gap or 'canal' in the tooth. When cleaned and cared for properly, restorations will not get subjected to decay, so the patient can avoid cases of periodontal disease. While restorations help to give a patient their teeth function back, they also help to restore their smile. Having a good looking and full smile is important because it affects a person's appearance and their self-esteem.
