Dental Exams

Dr. Valerie Fuller has designed her office as a welcoming environment in which both child and adult patients will feel comfortable. When you choose our office, your needs and concerns will be heard and we will plan care according to your unique needs as determined in your dental examination.

The dental exam may be routine or may be comprehensive depending on factors such as the length of time it has been since your last check-up. New patients may receive a more in-depth examination process in which we assess the position of the bite and the condition of the temporomandibular joints as well as soft tissues in the mouth, face, head, and neck. A full set of x-rays may also be taken in order to record the oral anatomy for the patient record.

During the initial consultation and exam in our Marietta dental office, it is important to communicate openly about:

• Your feelings about dental care. Many people don't just feel slightly stressed about the dentist; they experience severe anxiety, some to the point of avoiding checkups. We encourage our patients to discuss their fear so that we can plan care accordingly. Dr. Fuller explains treatments thoroughly and uses gentle techniques when providing care. She also offers nitrous oxide for patients who prefer a mild sedative during treatments.
• Your oral health. Dentistry is more effective with active patient involvement. We like to hear from our patients if they think they have developed a dental concern, perhaps sensitivity or a potential cavity.
• Your general health. If new medicines or new conditions have arisen since your last dental visit, your dentist wants to know! Even over-the-counter medications or conditions outside of the mouth have the potential to effect oral health and may require specific preventive care.

The overall goal of the dental exam is to identify and monitor each patient's oral condition. Our job is not to form an opinion about a patient's level of oral health or oral hygiene, but to put into action specific protocols to treat existing conditions and promote healthy teeth and gums through professional care, cleanings, and education.
