For many years, it was believed that sedation was unnecessary in dental practice, because local anesthetic is sufficient to numb a tooth or gum tissue completely. However, modern dentists have come to realize that sedation has more benefits than pain control. It can greatly improve patient comfort and convenience, making dental care more pleasant and less stressful.

The most obvious benefit is the ability to relax. For some patients, sedation is essential. Millions of Americans suffer from dental phobia, which is an overwhelming fear that keeps them from receiving dental care. Many more experience milder forms of anxiety. The causes can vary widely, ranging from bad experiences in childhood, to claustrophobia, but the result is the same. Anxiety makes dental care unpleasant, or unthinkable. Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is the mildest form of sedation. It is appropriate for short visits, or patients with moderate anxiety. Nitrous is also an analgesic (pain medication), which is beneficial to individuals with high pain sensitivity. The medication is neutralized with oxygen after treatment, so you are able to drive yourself home.
