Detailed Evaluation
When multiple dental concerns exist, comprehensive care is needed. In such a situation, Dr. Gjelaj may prescribe a Detailed Evaluation through which a great deal of information is gathered. The Detailed Evaluation will involve impression-taking as well as digital imaging with intra- and extra-oral cameras, full x-rays, an occlusal, or bite, analysis, and, if warranted, a 3D CT scan.
A variety of dental disciplines may be involved in the comprehensive dental treatment, which is most accurately designed with the detailed record taking achieved at Tarpon Springs Dental. Having extensive training in multi-disciplinary treatment, Dr. Gjelaj provides an extremely high level of clinical care.
The diagnosis and treatment of malocclusion
The way that teeth fit together is called occlusion. Most patients know the occlusion as their bite. A "good bite" is one in which the upper and lower teeth fit together well and there is harmony between the muscles, nerves, jaw, and other oral structures. In a "good bite," there is no strain on muscles or joints. A "bad bite," puts undue strain on teeth and all other oral structures.
The stress of misalignment
When teeth are misaligned, it is possible that malocclusion exists. A "bad bite" places stress on the teeth, increasing wear and tear. This problem also makes the jaw, the jaw joints, the muscles, ligaments, and other structures work harder. Under this stress, which may exist even if teeth look straight, a number of symptoms can develop, such as:
- Chronic headaches
- Migraines
- Generalized pain in the face, head, neck, or shoulders
- Excessive wear to teeth
- Broken teeth
- Bruxism (clenching or grinding)
- Ringing in the ears or ear pain
Bite analysis
Several different examinations may be included in the full bite analysis. Dr. Gjelaj will also take a full medical history to include any medications. X-rays will be taken to show the teeth, roots, and other structures. A thorough examination will be performed to identify areas of excessive wear or other problems. Specialized equipment may also be used to measure the length of muscles or the jaw. Jaw movements will also be observed and the nerves and muscles that control jaw movements may be tested in some cases.
Bite analysis will include listening to the jaw as it moves to identify potentially unhealthy sounds such as clicking or popping. Finally, impressions will allow us to build a model of the bite for further observation. All of this information enables Dr. Gjelaj to design the most appropriate treatment plan to achieve optimal functionality.
The goal of comprehensive dental care and the bite analysis is to design care to address the problem, not the symptoms. By correcting the bite or other underlying issues, your dentist helps you create your healthiest, happiest smile.
