Dentures have been used in dentistry for several decades as the primary form of tooth replacement. This appliance, which may be partial or complete, is removable and intended for the restoration of function and aesthetics after the loss of a few, or all teeth. Although durable and capable of lasting several years, repairs and adjustments may be necessary from time to time.

A complete denture appliance, designed to fit an entire arch or both upper and lower arches, may be completed in one of two ways. Conventional dentures are designed after gum tissue has healed after the removal of any remaining teeth. This requires a period of about 4 to 6 weeks without teeth. Another option is the immediate denture. To complete this treatment, the denture appliance is made ahead of time, and ready for placement immediately following the removal of remaining teeth. Immediate dentures allow you to retain your appearance with new teeth through the healing process, with adjustments made to the denture appliance once gum tissue has subsided to its new normal state.

Replacing lost teeth with a custom-made denture appliance enables you to chew and speak properly, and preserves facial structure by providing support for the cheeks and lips. Your dentist at West Chester Dental Group carefully measures, and takes precise impressions in order to facilitate the best possible fit. Before you are sent home with a final denture, we will assure fit with "try-in" appointments in which we assess shape as well as color. Once the ideal fit has been found, your denture process will be complete.

When lost teeth are replaced with a denture appliance, oral muscles and tissues must become accustomed to this new structure. For a time, gums and muscles may feel sore. Saliva flow may increase, and chewing may be somewhat challenging. Over time, these temporary effects will subside as the tissues adapt to the new dentures. If discomfort persists, contact us to schedule an appointment with your doctor. We want you to feel confident and happy with your chosen restoration.
