Natural Periodontal Care
Health is wealth. Invest in it!
Gum disease is more than a little inflammation around a tooth. This condition can have an enormous impact on everything from your breath to your comfort to the longevity of teeth and health. At Brand Wellness Center in Manhattan, we work with you on an individual basis to assess your level of gum health. From our initial evaluation, we can recommend herbal dental products, home care devices such as a magnetic irrigator and non-surgical dental treatment using the latest laser technology.
What is gum disease?
Gum disease is also called periodontal disease. This chronic bacterial infection leads to the degeneration of healthy tissue around teeth. If left untreated, infection can spread to the bone.
There are multiple stages in this disease process. Ideally, infection can be detected early, while there is a good chance that damage can be reversed. Dr. Brand strives for prevention and early treatment by conducting pH testing at routine hygiene visits.
The initial stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. The signs of mild infection are very subtle, including minor swelling or redness in the gums. Bleeding may also occur when you brush or floss your teeth. We can help you stop infection with prompt treatment for gingivitis.
Periodontitis is an advanced form of gum disease in which underlying bone is affected. Chronic periodontitis is prevalent among many adults and requires prompt, focused treatment in order to prevent the need for invasive gum surgery. By performing a thorough examination, Dr. Brand can identify the type of gum disease that is present and plan care accordingly.
Do you need treatment for gum disease?
The key to maintaining oral health is early detection. Because many of the symptoms of gum disease are subtle, it is important to observe your gums carefully and regularly. Signs that you need treatment for gum disease include:
1
Soreness or sensitivity
2
Bleeding gums
3
Teeth appear to be getting longer
4
Visible swelling of gum tissue around a tooth or teeth
5
Chronic bad breath
6
Expanding space between teeth
7
Changes in the fit of teeth
8
Sores in the mouth
There are numerous reasons to treat gum disease promptly. What they all amount to is the fact that health is wealth!
Gum disease increases your risk for several concerning health conditions, not to mention tooth loss. One health concern that has been linked to gum disease through research is heart disease. Theories about the association vary from the effect of plaque in the mouth on arteries, which carry blood to and from the heart to the passage of oral bacteria to arteries via the blood. Whatever the link between the two conditions, research has demonstrated a clear increase in risk for individuals with periodontal disease.
Individuals with this oral condition are also at a greater risk for health concerns including
diabetes and several other chronic
health conditions.
Treating gum disease
The intent of treatment is to resolve infection as quickly and efficiently as possible. The procedure performed correlates with the severity of disease and its effect on teeth, soft tissue, and on bone. When possible, gum disease is treated using laser technology, home care, nutritional supplementation, and other non-surgical therapies. Advanced cases, however, may require a surgical procedure to eradicate unhealthy bacteria.
