Treatment by stage
Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease. At this early stage, the symptoms of receding, swollen, and tender gum tissue can be reversed.Treatment includes some or all of the following:
- Professional dental cleaning
- Consistent, thorough home care with brushing, flossing
- Correction of ill-fitting crowns and other dental restorations
- Scaling to remove bacteria from teeth, under gums
- Root planing to smooth tooth root, stopping bacterial buildup
- Topical or oral antibiotics
