Four ways to keep your smile healthy during 4th of July festivities
On the 4th of July, Americans celebrate their freedom and independence as the “land of the free and the home of the brave.” It is a time to gather with family and friends and enjoy spectacular fireworks. Often, there are picnics and BBQs offering plenty of food from ribs and corn to ice cream and cake. Dr. Jonathan Golab knows a healthy smile is a happy smile. Here are four ways to keep your smile healthy during the holiday:
- Watch what you eat – BBQ sauce is loaded with sugar. Try to limit your intake of sugary foods because decay-causing bacteria inside your mouth multiply. They feed on sugar and mix with saliva to form a sticky film called plaque. When plaque is not removed, tooth decay can develop. Eventually, tooth decay can lead to gum disease. Be sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables to keep your smile as healthy as possible.
- Watch what you drink – Have plenty of water. It is important to stay hydrated when you are outside. Water also helps flush out the foods and sugars that may be lurking in your mouth.
- Brush – After your meal or as soon as you arrive home, brush your teeth. To reach the areas where the teeth and gums meet, hold your toothbrush at a slight angle. Store your toothbrush in an upright position to allow it to air dry because bacteria may build up when the brush is covered.
- Floss – It is important to floss so you can remove any food that is trapped between the teeth and gums. Wind the dental floss around your middle finger and wrap the remaining floss around your other middle finger. Then, grip the floss between your forefingers and thumb. You should curve the floss around your tooth until it meets the gums. Gently rub the sides of the teeth up and down with the floss.
Protecting your smile during holidays such as the 4th of July can ensure optimal oral as well overall health and wellbeing. Dr. Golab and our team wish you a happy, healthy, and safe 4th of July!
