Bad Breath Flower Mound

FLOWER MOUND, LEWISVILLE AND HIGHLAND VILLAGE, TEXAS – The old saying, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure can be applied to many dental problems, especially bad breath, which often is the result of negligence.

There are certain measures you can take to control bad breath and while garlic and other food items are commonly to blame, some people suffer from a condition known as halitosis, or chronic bad breath.

“Halitosis is a result of poor dental health habits and may be a sign of other health problems,” said Dr. Jonathan Golab, a Highland Village and Flower Mound Invisalign provider.

Dr. Golab has put together some important tips on how to prevent bad breath:

    1. Clean your mouth regularly and thoroughly. The two main sources of bad breath are bacteria and decaying food particles. Brush your teeth twice a day, floss after every meal and make it a habit to use a tongue scraper, which will remove lingering particles on your tongue.
    1. Stay hydrated. Dry mouths are stinky mouths, which is why your breath is so foul in the morning. Drink water throughout the day, especially after eating. You can also chew sugar free gum sweetened with xylitol to stimulate saliva production and mask odors.
    1. Eat crispy fruits and vegetables. It is best to avoid foods that cause bad breath such as onions, garlic, cheese and coffee. Eating crunchy foods like cucumbers, carrots, apples and celery will naturally clean your mouth and remove plaque in between your teeth and gums.
    1. Limit tobacco use and alcohol consumption. Tobacco products can be a great contributor to bad breath, as they make the mouth dry and leave a smelly residue that lingers even after brushing. Alcohol also dehydrates the cells in the mouth, which leaves you with a foul smell. Always rehydrate with water.
  1. Visit the dentist regularly. Dentists generally recommend that you have a checkup and cleaning twice a year. During this time, they can assess your mouth and determine whether the cause of your bad breath is due to medical reasons. Sometimes bad breath can be a sign of an infection, diabetes or tonsil stones.

“Bad breath may be embarrassing, but it’s curable,” said the Lewisville dental professional who offers porcelain veneers at his family dentistry practice. “Don’t expect immediate results when trying to win the bad breath battle. It’s a process that takes time, but if you have concerns, your dentist is always available.”
