Choose Dental Implants with Care, Says Flower Mound dentist

FLOWER MOUND, TX – “While today’s options for patients seeking to replace a missing tooth offer desirable, pleasing results, patients should make selections with great care,” says Flower Mound dentist Dr. Jonathan Golab. “Patients may select proven, highly successful ways to “regain” a tooth,” says the Flower Mound dental crowns provider, whose areas of expertise include dental implants, dental crowns and porcelain veneers. But it is important for patients do research, consult with a trusted professional, and select a proven option that is right for them. “We are very lucky, in that we live now in an extremely technologically advanced time in the field of dentistry,” Golab says, “we can restore teeth with ease, while offering very attractive results.” The Flower Mound dentist says dental implants as restorations have many advantages. The “artificial roots” made of titanium and surgically placed in the jawbone have few disadvantages.

After the operation, a crown is placed over the implant. The implant feels like a real tooth, and functions like one, while maintaining the bone in the jaw. Patients can floss as usual, and the tooth will last a lifetime. However, Golab advises against one of the newer options now being offered, as a precaution. “Zirconium implants are being marketed as free of metal,” says Golab, who also is a Flower Mound porcelain veneers provider, “but Zirconium is a metal.” “These basically have the same risks as titanium implants,” he says, “but are made as a single, solid piece.” They are brittle. If broken, a complete replacement would be needed, which would call for more operations. “These are quite new on the market,” Golab says, “so it would be advisable to wait and see prior to pursuing this solution to tooth replacement.” However, there are proven, reliable options available and replacing missing teeth is very important.

Reasons to pursue tooth replacement include aesthetics, and the prevention of additional problems – such as appearing older as the jaw bone shrinks. People can also experience further tooth loss, poor digestion because of challenges in chewing food, and, if only one side can be used to chew, teeth can wear down prematurely, resulting in “jaw-joint” problems.
