Keep Your Super Bowl Sunday Spread Teeth Friendly
FLOWER MOUND AND GRAPEVINE, TEXAS – Super Bowl Sunday means gearing up for not only the game, but for the food that goes along with watching the most anticipated game of the year.
“The Super Bowl is synonymous with food,” said Dr. Jonathan Golab, a Flower Mound and Grapevine Invisalign provider. “The last thing on people’s minds when they are hovering over the spread of delicious food is their teeth. Believe it or not, the foods you eat can affect your smile as much as brushing or flossing.”
The teeth whitening professional offers suggestions for a more teeth friendly spread at this year’s party. After all, the healthier alternatives can be just as delectable as the bad options.
- Wings: While they are a good source of protein, they can leave small pieces behind in the crevices of teeth. Opt for non-breaded wings and sauce on the side. Most importantly, don’t forget to put out the celery with this dish.
“The additional chewing celery requires produces more saliva, which neutralizes bacteria in the mouth,” said the dental care services provider. “It’s also a naturally abrasive food that massages gums and cleans between teeth.”
- Fries: Choose sweet potato fries over starch-laden potato fries. They are not only packed with nutrients that are good for oral health, but they do not stick to your teeth, which can be a breeding ground for bacteria.
- Popcorn: Air popped popcorn is a healthy snack full of whole grains and fiber. It’s a high-density food, which means it fills you up with fewer calories, while also stimulating gums to help clean your teeth.
- Sweets: Sticky and tacky foods are a no-no, said Dr. Golab. Surprisingly, chocolate is OK. The fat in chocolate soaks up acids in the mouth and there is also an antibacterial agent in cocoa that prevents plaque from forming.
“Chocolate with nuts is preferable as long as there is no caramel or sticky agents inside,” said Dr. Golab, who offers veneers. “But always remember, moderation is key.”
Cheese: A ball of flavorful cheese or a cheese tray is always a welcome sight at a party and it’s good for your teeth. Cheese preserves and rebuilds tooth enamel and produces saliva, which kills bacteria.
Be sure to floss and brush after eating any or all of these tasty treats, said Dr. Golab. And if you plan on drinking soda, sweet tea, juice or beer, be sure to rinse your mouth out with water frequently to reduce the acid levels in your mouth, which can cause tooth decay.
