Sun and Fun? May be Not.

surgical

The Burning Facts, more than 1 million people in the United States are diagnosed with skin cancer each year, making it the most common form of cancer in the country. What is important to know is that there are ways to protect yourself, making this largely preventable. Here are our five safety tips to keep you in the know: We carry the Elta M.D. sunscreen line – all hypo-allergetic, PABA-free, broad spectrum sunscreens. Speak with our Aesthetic Coordinator to choose the sunscreen line that best suits your needs.

Tip #1 – Screen Star

Sunscreen use is an important part of your sun protection program. Used properly, certain sunscreens protect your skin from the sun’s damaging Ultraviolet (UV) radiation. We recommend using a broad spectrum sunscreen, SPF 30 or above year-round. Look for products that offer both UVA and UVB protection. It’s important that you use your sunscreen properly for the most effectiveness. In the summer, don’t forget to upgrade to water-resistant, if you plan on swimming and remember to reapply throughout the day. Make sure the product is marked with the “Skin Cancer Foundation” seal – to earn this seal, the product manufacturer must show scientific data that it sufficiently and safely aids in the prevention of sun-induced damage to the skin.

Tip #2 – Glow Girl

Ladies can augment the benefits of sunscreen by wearing mineral makeup. At Khrom Dermatology, we cary a full line of mineral make-up by Jane Iredale. Quality formulas are used in these products with skin care benefits. Their minerals conform to the most current technology to ensure broad spectrum sun protection (i.e. bismuth oxychloride, boron nitride, mica, talc, titanium dioxide – minerals).

Tip #3 – Self-Preservation

Take advantage of Sun Protective Clothing and Shades – it’s our first line of defense against the sun’s harmful rays and is the single most effective form of sun protection. There are companies that specialize in sun protection outdoor clothing that carries a UPF rating (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) while making a fashion statement! At the very least, it is essential for everyone’s summer wardrobe to include a wide brimmed hat, rash guards and a pair of UV protective shades.

Tip #4 – Topical Anti-Oxidants

We all know the benefits of vitamins and anti-oxidants in the pursuit of good health. However, don’t forget that anti-oxidants can also be used in cream form. A quality anti-oxidant cream, used as part of your anti-aging skin care regimen, will work wonders for your appearance, as well as act as an additional aid in the fight against harmful environmental factors, such as over exposure to the sun. Anti-oxidants help reverse the damage to your skin, as well as reduce the signs of aging. Khrom Dermatolgy Products Page has a list of recommended anti-oxidant creams for different skin types.

Tip #5 – Dying for a Tan

Some people still think it’s sexy or fashionable to be tanned, What they don’t realize is that certain types skin cancer can be fatal, if not properly and timely diagnosed. Our advice is that you seek the shade, especially between 10AM and 4PM and definitely avoid tanning and UV tanning beds/booths.

Lastly, this is not a tip, but good common sense practice – see your physician every year for a professional skin exam.
