Botox vs. Dysport vs. Xeomin: What’s the Difference?

Beauty Young Woman Portrait over White. Short Curly Hair

You know that if you’re serious about treating common signs of aging – including fine lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet – you need to include an anti-aging injection in your skincare regimen.  But with so many anti-aging injections out there – including Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin – you might be confused about which one you should opt for.

So when it comes to treating your wrinkles, fine lines, and crow’s feet, which one should you pick?

What You Need to Know

Over the passage of time, repeated facial muscle movement can lead to the formation of wrinkles and lines, which may be difficult to treat with skin creams and serums alone.  Fortunately, some facial injections can help relax these repeated muscle movements, which helps minimize the look of fine lines and wrinkles, especially on the forehead region.

One of the most famous facial injections to do that is Botox, which uses botulinum toxin to effectively paralyze facial muscles at the injection site.  Approved by the FDA in 2002, Botox is a popular treatment for forehead wrinkles and crow’s feet.  Botox injections typically last for up to six months, which makes this a more high-maintenance treatment.

Dysport, on the other hand, has a smaller protein load than Botox, helping it to work more quickly than Botox.  In most cases, Dysport produces results that last about as long as Botox, with many people seeing relief from their frown lines after about four treatments.  What’s more, Dysport results can often be seen in as little as 48 to 72 hours, which is faster than Botox. This is due to the smaller protein load.

Studies have also shown that this smaller protein load results in less antibodies forming against it. While the incidence level is low, some patients who’ve had repeated Botox injections develop antibodies – which fight foreign proteins – leading to some “resistance” to Botox, making Dysport an effective alternative.

In addition to these two well-known treatments, there’s also Xeomin, a newer anti-aging injection that presents clients with another option for fighting wrinkles.  Xeomin – which does not need to be refrigerated – has proven to be successful at treating wrinkles between the eybrows. Results from a Xeomin treatment can last anywhere from three to six months; clients can start seeing visible results about a week after the initial treatment.

Xeomin contains the same active ingredient as Botox; however, like Dysport, it has a smaller protein load than Botox, so it can work more quickly.  Botulinum toxin contains and active component and additional proteins. Xeomin has removed these additional proteins to help minimize the risk of allergy associated with these proteins.

Studies are still being done to compare all three, particularly the role the additional proteins have in achieving longer lasting results. Additionally, since allergic reactions and even resistance to Botox is rare it would be a bit premature to conclude that Dysport and Xeomin are any “safer” than Botox. All three are FDA- approved.
