Biobloc Orthotropics is one of the procedures available in Calgary to help straighten your child’s teeth

Every parent wants to see their child smile. While we all believe our child’s smile is uniquely beautiful, teeth that are improperly positioned or crooked not only impair the appearance of the smile, they can also be detrimental to oral health. Biobloc Orthotropics from Drs. Robertson and Redd is a different approach to orthodontic treatment.
First developed in the 1950s in England, the goal of Biobloc Orthotropics is to straighten teeth and optimize facial development. The treatment, which is ideal for patients 12 years of age or younger, helps move both the upper and lower jaws to the ideal position near the front of the face. It also helps correct oral rest posture which is the primary reason the jaws are out of place.
How do you know if your child’s facial growth needs to be corrected?
The first sign is a downward and backward position of the jaw. This is most easily noticeable in children who have upper front teeth that appear to stick out. This is caused by a recessed lower jaw.
How it works:
Biobloc Orthotropics treatment is broken down into two phases. In the first phase, the upper front teeth and jaw is moved into the ideal position. The patient will wear a dental appliance 23 hours a day which simultaneously moves the upper jaw forward and widens it. This process typically takes up to nine months.
The second phase involves a removable appliance called the Biobloc. The Biobloc sits on the upper jaw and has guides that help keep the lower jaw in the proper rest position. This allows the lower jaw to gradually move into the correct place. The Biobloc is worn for 24 hours per day but can be removed for eating, cleaning the teeth, sports, or musical activities. The Biobloc phase of treatment usually lasts six to twelve months.
