Crowns first came into use by the Etruscans 2,500 years ago, and still play a crucial role in dentistry today. When a tooth has been weakened, but the roots are healthy, a dental crown can prevent the need for a tooth extraction. A crown restoration covers all surfaces of a tooth, returning it to its normal size and shape, restoring its function and appearance, and protecting it from further damage.
