Accidents and injuries can occur at any time. At Biltmore Dental Center in Phoenix, we offer emergency dental care and can often accommodate dental emergencies on the same day. We recommend contacting us immediately; however, knowing what to do in the meantime can help save a tooth and limit discomfort. The most common types of dental emergencies, and advice on how to handle them, are:
- Breaking or chipping a tooth – if possible, save any broken parts of the tooth, rinse your mouth and the pieces with warm water. In the event of bleeding, clean gauze may stop the bleeding after about 10 minutes. Discomfort and swelling may be relieved by applying a cold compress on the outside cheek near the injury
- Injury to the soft tissues, such as lips, gums, tongue, or cheeks – to control bleeding rinse with a little bit of salt water and apply clean gauze for 15 to 20 minutes. A cold compress on the outside of the mouth can alleviate pain. If bleeding continues, contact your dentist or hospital emergency room
- Lost fillings or crowns – over the counter dental cement may be used to temporarily keep the crown or filling in place
- Toothache – rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove any potential food. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek or mouth to reduce swelling or discomfort
- Lost tooth – if possible, retain the tooth, grasping it by the top. You may try to place the tooth back in the socket, however, do not force it. The tooth may be placed in a small measure of milk, preferably, or water with a pinch of salt. Over-the-counter products containing cell growth medium may be available
- Abscess infection around the root or between the teeth and gums – usually indicated by a pimple and swelling, accompanied by severe pain. Rinsing with salt water, about 1/2 teaspoon of salt to 8 ounces of water, can help draw out the infection and reduce discomfort
