Eczema

Eczema is a chronic form of atopic dermatitis, a skin condition that may flare up and subside thousands of times over the years. Due to the chronic nature of eczema, we assist our patients in finding ways to manage their skin health. With an extensive background in dermatologic conditions, we can help you develop a plan that works for your needs.

One of the challenges of eczema is that this condition has a number of forms. In infants, atopic dermatitis may affect the skin on the hands and feet, as well as the face and scalp. Children and adults may report chronic irritation in the skin on the knees, elbows, or hands. The dryness and itchiness caused by eczema can become intensely uncomfortable. People with this condition can be helped immensely with medical dermatologic care. Our staff works with children’s pediatricians to achieve the greatest effect as quickly as possible.

Collaboration is beneficial, especially when attempting to treat eczema in children. The pediatrician or family doctor may have recommendations to promote healthy skin from the inside out. Often, dietary changes can alleviate some of the symptoms of dermatitis. We investigate the environmental and topical irritants that may be exacerbating eczema. We also discuss medicated topical solutions, explaining to patients how to use them to soothe dry, itchy skin.

Because eczema may present differently in each person, an accurate diagnosis can be a challenge. Your dermatologist has spent years learning about the hundreds of diseases that affect the skin, and has the skill to differentiate eczema from similar conditions. During a consultation in our Sterling / South Riding office, we perform a thorough consultation and review medical history in addition to a full skin evaluation. With an accurate diagnosis, we can then plan the treatment that you need to look and feel your best.

Some habits that may minimize the effects of eczema include avoiding triggers that irritate your skin. This can be very hot or cold temperatures, dry climate, hot water, and possibly certain foods. For severe cases, we may recommend prescription medication in addition to topical cream. Some of our patients also benefit from UV light therapy performed in our office.

The staff at Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, Inc. provides outstanding dermatologic care that can improve your comfort. Call (866) 808-3320 to schedule your visit.
