About Dr. Peter Lloyd, the Rheumatologist in Encinitas

Dr. Peter Lloyd completed his rheumatology fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles. Prior to moving to California, Dr. Lloyd received his undergraduate degree in Biology and his Masters in Business from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He received his Medical Degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Chicago.

Dr. Lloyd focused on rheumatologic diseases and clinical research throughout his training. During fellowship he participated in extra training in musculoskeletal ultrasound. He is a published author in both the peer reviewed medical literature and has written textbook chapters. His research work is featured in trade journals and popular media, and he shares insight with other medical professionals through teaching engagements.

Dr. Lloyd is a practicing rheumatologist and CEO of Seaside Rheumatology & Wellness Center in Encinitas.He holds board certifications in both Internal Medicine and Rheumatology.

  • Musculoskeletal ultrasound – Sound wave imaging can be used to create an interior view of joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. This modality is safe and non-invasive, it can be used on any area of the body to diagnose joint inflammation, sprains, strains, and tears. Ultrasound can also be used for guidance during injections.
  • Joint injections – Therapeutic agents are introduced into joints, with ultrasound guidance. The treatments are effective in alleviating discomfort and reducing inflammation, for acute flare-ups as well as chronic pain. Improved comfort and range of motion from the injections is a great adjunct to physical therapy and exercise programs.
  • Nerve blocks – Chronically inflamed nerves can be injected with an anesthetic solution to help relieve pain and promote healing. This treatment is commonly used for chronic discomfort of the neck, shoulder and back areas.
