Common Concerns
Taking the Fear Out of Dentistry
The number one reason that people do not visit the dentist is because of the fear of pain and discomfort. If you’ve had a negative experience in the past, this fear makes sense. However, with new technology and treatment techniques and our caring attitude, many patients who once avoided the dentist out of fear are amazed at how comfortable a trip to our office can be.
It Begins with Communication
We make sure to discuss your previous experiences and concerns with you
so that we know how to help you overcome your dental anxiety. We explain all of
the treatments to you in depth so that you understand what’s going to happen
during your time with us. We never begin treatment until you’ve had all of your
questions addressed.
Modern Technology Helps
Because of advances and options in modern anesthetics, they are
extremely effective. We make sure to check with you before we begin the
procedure to make sure that you’re numb, and we check throughout the procedure.
If the numbness begins to wear off or you feel uncomfortable, we will cease
working and take steps to make you comfortable before continuing.
We use a topical anesthetic before delivering your local anesthetic,
making it much more comfortable. We can also use “the magic wand” in place of
the needle for those who are extremely sensitive. The Wand is an electronic
anesthetic delivery system that delivers numbing without discomfort.
Other Things We Can Do
We can use nitrous oxide (laughing gas), which produces a feeling of
relaxation and euphoria, helping nervous patients relax. We can also prescribe
medication before your visit. Some patients find listening to music through
headphones very helpful, and we invite you to bring along your iPod or mp3
player.
Whatever you do, don’t let prior bad experiences keep you from enjoying
great oral health now. Visit us! We’ll set your mind at ease and help you gain
confidence that we will provide a painless, anxiety-free visit.
I haven’t been to the dentist in a long time
Don’t be embarrassed! Many people avoid the dentist because they’re
worried they’ve waited too long. They think that the dentist won’t be
understanding or will shame them for not taking good care of their oral health.
Nothing could be further from the truth at Aliso Smiles!
Almost every one of us at Aliso Smiles has had at least one family
member who has avoided the dentist… some for a very long time! We understand.
We care about helping people get back into a regular dental routine and we would
be happy to see you.
It doesn’t matter why you’ve avoided the dentist. People avoid the
dentist for a variety of reasons, including…
- Fear from past problems
- Financial concerns
- Other health issues
- Simple procrastination
We can help you get the care you need. We offer patients ways to relax
and feel less anxious. Our staff is extremely understanding and eager to help
you develop great oral health habits like visiting our office regularly.
I’ll go when I have a problem…
Many people don’t go to the dentist until they have a problem. This can
be a mistake. You probably already know that preventive care is the best way to
avoid problems before they start. However, many people don’t find this
convincing enough to get them to the dentist for regular checkups.
What will get you to the office before you have a problem? Did you know
that we can do more than protect your smile with those trips to our office – we
can also detect a wide range of serious health issues?
Why not call us and set up an appointment? It can prevent complicated
problems and extensive treatment down the road… but it could end up being even
more important. We’d love to see you, no matter how long it’s been.
I have a problem now and I don’t have a dentist…
We do everything we can to see emergencies as soon as possible, even
for first-time visitors. Even if your current dental problem isn’t an
emergency, we encourage you to contact us for your appointment with Dr. Patel. Dental
problems don’t just go away. The earlier you seek treatment, the easier it will
be to treat the problem with more conservative, less costly care.
