Nitrous

One of the earliest forms of sedation is still used today!
Nitrous oxide, also known as “happy gas” or “laughing gas,” is ideal for patients who experience mild to moderate anxiety related to dental care, and who wish to drive themselves to and from their dental appointments. Nitrous is an excellent choice for sedation, as it effectively calms worries and helps patients get the treatment they need without fear.
This mild sedative is delivered once the patient is in the dental chair. This is different from oral sedation, which may be prescribed and taken hours before a dental appointment. As such, there may be some nervousness before a dental visit, but patients can calm their anxiety knowing that, as soon as they are fitted with the comfortable nasal mask, and begin breathing in nitrous oxide gas, they will feel an immediate sense of calmness and wellbeing.
Nitrous oxide is suitable for patients of all ages. It allows the patient to remain awake during treatment, and is able to communicate with Dr. Patel at all times. By slowing the central nervous system, nitrous dulls the senses to external stimulation, relaxes the body, and calms the mind.
One of the benefits of this form of sedation is that it is fast acting. Within just a few breaths, nitrous oxide works on slowing racing thoughts. As we commence with treatment, we are able to adjust the level of delivery creating more or less sedation to accommodate patients’ needs. The ability to adjust the sedative allows us to tailor treatment to each patient and each procedure. Patients who are very nervous, or who are undergoing a lengthy procedure, may be given a higher dose of nitrous oxide to elicit calm feelings. Through constant monitoring, we are able to ensure the right amount of sedative is being delivered throughout the procedure.
Nitrous oxide is an extremely safe form of dental sedation, with almost zero risk of overdose. This method of delivery is predictable, taking the guesswork out of sedation. Fast acting, nitrous is also quick to leave the system. When this form of sedative is used for dental treatment, the patient is able to drive home safely.
