NYC Juvederm - What is Juvederm™ made of?

Both Juvederm™ and Restylane™ are made of Hyaluronic acids prepared in laboratories. These are mucopolysaccharides, which mean they are made up of sugar-water molecules. Most dermatologists believe that these mucopolysaccharides are derived from recombinant therapy. This is not an animal source, which is the main advantage, and the point which many dermatologists want to focus on. In past procedures, the collagen used was derived from cows. Similarly, the first Hyaluronic acids were actually taken from animals, but this is no longer the case. The brands of Hyaluronic acids used in Restylane™ and Juvederm™ have evolved, and are now much more pure and requires no skin test.

The advantages of Juvederm™ are easily evident. Juvederm™ helps in the process of plumping up and the leveling of both creases and deep facial wrinkles. In addition to this, the finer lines visible around the eyes and the mouth can be treated with use of Juvederm™. It can also be used to carefully enhance the lips. The effects of Juvederm™ treatment are immediately visible. Then the patient can decide whether an additional injection is necessary (although one preliminary treatment is all that is needed). The results of Juvederm™ treatment last long, for six months or more. The body steadily absorbs Juvederm™, and the site of injection, although originally sore, becomes pliant and soft and then blends in with the surrounding skin. Lastly, no allergy testing is required with Juvederm™, because the Hyaluronic acid contained in it is safe and human-based.

On June 2nd 2006, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Juvederm™. Although Juvederm™ was approved, the FDA also noticed that some patients in the clinical trials experienced side effects. These side effects included mild redness, lumpiness, tenderness, bruising, swelling, or itching at the site where Juvederm™ was injected. However, these side effects were not permanent and were mild, not lasting more than seven days.
