Q: I had badly aged the skin of my chest when I was young with sunbathing. I used a reflector and mixed iodine in baby oil. Now I have wrinkles and tons of brown spots. I had my face treated with CO2 laser many years ago and it helped but my chest looks so old in comparison. My neck too! What can be done because I know the Carbon Dioxide laser can risk scarring my skin in these areas?

A: One of the best advances in technology we have seen are the non-invasive minimal to no down-time technologies. The Pelleve radio-frequency device can help improve the damaged collagen, and Fraxel Clear and Brilliant or Fraxel Restore / Dual lasers can improve the coloration and more superficial dermal collagen. These lasers do not prevent you from continuing on with your daily functions. The Pelleve has truly no down time and the Fraxel Dual and Clear and Brilliant lasers, cause some slight redness, swelling and bronzing/flaking but do not require staying at home to take care of the skin as there are no wounds created by these lasers. You can apply creams and sunscreens and go outside. Certainly you need to minimize any sun exposure and use your sunscreen if that skin is exposed otherwise your investment in the treatments will be in vain.

Q: I had Botox for my crows feet and love it but the lines below the eyelids are still there. What can I do? Should I have fillers?

A: Fillers in the lower eyelid creases, even the more forgiving superficial Restylane and Juvederm are not the best treatments as they may cause lumpiness and bruising. Non-surgical treatments such as Pelleve, Fraxel laser and Portrait resurfacing may help these lines. Surgical skin blepharoplasty can make the skin smoother. Chemical peels can rarely help.
