Maintaining proper dental care habits
In order to maintain proper dental care, it must start in the home. The dentist is unable to be with patients all day and every day to ensure they maintain their smile’s health and wellness at all times. This is why Dr. Terry Vines of Pure Gold Professionals in Dentistry will educate his patients on ways to keep their smile healthy with proper steps in home dental care.
The first step to proper oral care is tooth brushing. Brushing the teeth is the best way to maintain dental health. Patients are encouraged to brush their teeth after every meal to brush away food particles and anything that can stick to the teeth and result in the development of plaque and tartar. Brushing can also remove acids that may eat away at the enamel and result in cavities.
Flossing is the next step. Patients can floss after every meal, though each evening is sufficient. Flossing allows patients to remove particles of food that may be stuck between the teeth. This is done easily and simply every day and should be a part of both children and adult’s oral hygiene habits.
The third step is maintaining dental appointments with Dr. Terry Vines. Patients are encouraged to visit their dentist at least twice a year for a professional cleaning and examination. Those who have had consistent problems with their smile, or those who are dealing with periodontal disease, may be asked to visit more often to control the condition.
Last is a proper diet. By staying away from sodas and candies, patients can avoid increasing their risk for tooth decay. These acids and sugars can stick to the teeth and eat away at the enamel, resulting in cavities that need to be filled. When cavities are not diagnosed early and treated, they can become deep and affect the dental pulp inside the tooth—requiring root canal therapy or even worse, extraction.
