Dental Care
Maintaining good dental health comes from proper dental care, which your dentist can advise you on. Aside from regular brushing and flossing at home, we at Portmore Dental Office offer you several treatments that not only keep your teeth clean, but also free from disease and further complications. These include teeth cleanings and treatments for dental problems and oral cancer checks.
Here at Portmore, we have a dedicated team of treatment coordinators who, with our hygienists, show patients how they can improve their oral health. We provide microscopes where patients can see the amount of bacteria in their mouths, so that they know what they need to work on, and realize how important it is to get rid of those bacteria. Seeing these images firsthand gives patients a better idea of what is actually going on in their mouths and makes them more concerned about their own oral health. We also have visual cameras where patients can see pictures of the work that is being done on them, and provide pictures of the teeth that are being treated, both before and after.
These same elements are used in our 'fresh breath clinic' where the patient can look through the microscope and see where there is puss in the gums or buckets. This will motivate them to take proper care of their teeth and gums in order to prevent further problems. Small issues like puss and bacteria can be linked to stemming diseases and can lead to the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke, all of which gets in through your gums.
In addition, Portmore also has a special machine in the form of Diaganet, which captures lesions before they become big problems. This type of preventative care will ensure that your problems are caught early and can be dealt with before they turn into more serious issues that might not be able to be treated easily.
We also have special interest in treatments that prevent severe health problems. One such area is sleep apnea, where the patient stops breathing while they are asleep, but are not aware of it. During these episodes, the patient's breathing is interrupted because their jaw is misaligned and their tongue falls back into the throat. Even though the body is awakened, the patient has no recollection, but they feel tired when they wake up. This is a serious condition that may even lead to death, and fortunately, dental technology has come up with appliances that the patient can wear while they sleep. These appliances keep the jaw in the right position and allow the patient to sleep better and have less disturbed sleep. At Portmore, we also excel in special splints to treat TMJ, which keeps the joints in a stable position.
