It was a special day at AIM for Seva Balika Vidyalaya, Khategaon. Sri Mike Lakhani, the esteemed donor of the Chatralaya building was visiting the Chatralaya and the school which are in the same premises. This is the slogan with which Dr Terry Papneja, founder of Aim for Seva (Toronto Chapter) prefaced his power point presentation at the fund raising gala on Sept 14 at the Pearson Convention Center in Toronto.

The Khategaon Student home has been operational since June 2010 and the school from 2011 July. The school and hostel is built on a 4-acre land, a life-time of earnings kindly donated by Radhe Shyam Bohare, an agricultural laborer from Khategaon. His dream became a reality with the help of Mike and Ila Lakhani, who came forward to sponsor the construction of the infrastructure with a donation of US $500,000 in 2011. Mike Lakhani, vice-president of a major financial management firm is the sponsor of an ‘all-girls hostel’, at Khategoan, a small village near Indore, a city in the Indian province of Madhya Pradesh. To build a hostel costs around $63,000, quite a substantial amount. Smart donors do not drop this amount into canisters at the checkout counter. Neither do they give reactively in a ‘knee-jerk’ reaction to gut-wrenching visuals of some tear-jerking advertisement. Instead, they take the time to identify which causes are important to them and their families; they do their due-diligence in studying, researching and analyzing the charity’s past performance; they ensure that their dollar is indeed making a difference!… Read more
