I just returned from the American Academy of Periodontology 100 year anniversary in San Francisco. It was nice to see colleagues there from all over the world. Conferences are a way for all dental professionals to get together, learn new advancements in not only dentistry, but also in other fields, such as medicine and nutrition.
I would like to bring to you every week for the next month, a new advancement, breakthrough discussed at our meeting.
So chew on this:
Xylitol gum is scientifically proven to decrease cavities. For those of you who’ve never tried xylitol, I highly recommend it! I’m not a fan of stevia because of it’s aftertaste, which i was never able to get used to. But xylitol tastes just like sugar and it is a great substitute for those of you with a sweet tooth.
Dental cavities are the most prevalent chronic disease in United states, according to NIH. It usually forms as a result of too much processed foods, such as breads, cookies, sugar or too much sticky fruits, such as bananas. If you or your child are suffering from dental cavities, xylitol gum is a great way to reverse cavities.
The research shows that one must ingest 6-10 grams of xylitol per day in 3-5 doses of gum chewed 5 minutes to be effective. But not all the chewing gum brands on the market have a good amount of xylitol in them.
Here are some of the ones recommended: Hershey IceBreakers Ice Cubes gum as 1.2g per piece so 5 pieces per day is therapeutic Epic Xylitol gum has 1.05g per piece so 6 pieces per day is therapeutic Xylimax Gum has 0.86g per piece so 7 pieces per day is therapeutic Xylichew Gum has 1.0g per piece so 6 pieces per day is therapeutic Xyla Gum has 1.0g per piece so 6 pieces per day is therapeutic Spry Gum has 0.72g per piece so 8 pieces per day is therapeutic If you find a xylitol chewing gum, make sure you check how much xylitol is in each piece.
Let’s spread the word about xylitol!
In great health,
Dr. Sanda
