I hear from many patients who believe that just because a product is natural, it is completely safe. This cannot be further front the truth. Sometimes even too much of a good thing can be to our detriment.
Take for example natural toothpaste or rinse; steer clear of any which has sanguinarine as an ingredient. This is an extract from some plants, but mostly bloodroot. If applied to skin, sanguinarine kills cells and may destroy tissue. It is used in toothpastes and mouth rinses as an anti-plaque agent, but in several studies, it has been shown to cause precancerous lesions, known as “leukoplakia”, in more than 80% of patients using it. I would advise you to avoid any products containing sanguinarine.
Some of my favorite natural products which are safe and have no side effects are homeopathic formulations. The worst thing that could happen is that they will not have any effect. I recommend homeopathy every day in my office. It works for pain and swelling after surgical procedures, for getting rid of canker sores and for nerve pain/regeneration, to name a few.
Homeopathic medication is used in Europe extensively and definitely one of the safest natural remedies out there. In the US, you can easily find it at a natural foods store, and at most pharmacies. Integrative pharmacies, such as the Homeopathic pharmacy in Santa Monica, has licensed homeopaths who can recommend to you the right product.
